Simple Organizing Strategies for Iowa

Order In The House | Print |

If the title intrigues you, you may already have an appreciation for the need to create sanity in your fast paced world.  If too much of your time is spent looking for things and  people/bills are late, homework goes missing or unfinished, your idea of filing is piling and tension is running high, then the current system for home and family could use some improvement.  Maybe what once worked no longer fills the needs of your changing lifestyle.  Read on for 5 steps to guide and encourage you to invest the time for your family, home, and self that will pay you back with interest.

Overcoming Overwhelming
Chaos in the house not only causes tension but feels suffocating and out of control.  It can overwhelm to the point you become paralyzed. The first thing to organize is your thoughts.  Take a good look at your home and schedule, now envision how they would look in a perfect world.  What is your version of the life you want to live?  How do you want to spend your time? How do you want it to feel in your home?  How do you want to interact with family and friends? Do you want areas of calm and what about areas of stimulation?  What do you want to accomplish in your home?  How do you and your loved ones want to live, where do you want to hang out?  Streamlining your lives and homes is a personal response to a world that can feel out of control.  If your house feels more like a storage facility than a home then the stuff you own has ended up owning you.

There Is No Right Way, Just Your Way
As the saying goes, “A place for everything, and everything in its place”.  But what is the best ‘place’.  The answer will not be the same for everyone. A well run and organized home fits into your lifestyle, not the other way around.  If you are a visual personality, you will want your ‘places’ within your line of vision.  Others prefer the ‘places’ to be tucked away.  Often a little of both will suit you.  Your home is the physical and emotional base for your family.  If the house and schedule are a wreck, life starts to crumble.  Children are dramatically affected by clutter and disorganization.  If they are surrounded by too much of everything except space to breathe and think, a silent message of hopelessness is sent.  A message that says we are powerless to change things in our live.  But things CAN change and the emotional benefits are HUGE.  Much bigger than the effort it will take to clean up your life.

You Don't Need Lots Of Square Footage To Be Organized
The smaller your space the more critical!  Just as disorganization and clutter can cause tension, an open and clutter free home creates externally the mood you feel internally.  Free yourself of clutter and free yourself of some of your anxiety and stress.  Find extra space in unusual places.  Create an office area out of a closet.  Use space under the bed for storage as long as it is contained properly and easy to access.  Utilize vertical space.  There are countless shelving systems that will take advantage of  unused wall space.  There is color coding,  see thru bins with lids and you probably have things in your home that can be used in a new manner to help you get organized.  If your energy is not spent coping with a mess you are free to tend to the things that really matter.  You are free to live a richer, more focused life.  The investment to change and create order in your home is an investment that will turn things around.  An investment that will pay you back in new found time with interest.

Re-Evaluate
Whoa! How did you get here?  You used to maintain a level or order, or at least you thought you did.  Now the dining room table is filled with junk mail and the bedroom is overflowing with dirty laundry or toys.  You can’t find the bills that will be due soon.  The thing about clutter is that it is insidious. It is a slow but steady tide that enters little by little.  When things are stored in rooms they don’t belong and serve no purpose, the stuff is controlling you.  As circumstances in your life change, often the system needs to change with you.  Go back to basics and ask yourself the questions that help to organize your thoughts.  The answers will guide you in the right direction for your family.

If I Knew How To Do All That, I Wouldn't Be In This Mess
Consider a professional organizer to help with your project or just to get you started and pointed in the right direction.  With lots of expertise and experience a professional organizer will help you figure out what your best vision for home and family is.  From there a master plan of action is created that will tackle issues one at a time ‘til completion.  They will work side by side with you or, if you prefer,  coach you in your journey.  They will also provide you with techniques to maintain your new found ORDER IN THE HOUSE so you and your family can enjoy the rest of your life.
